Lean Thinking Model and Its’ Positive Effects on Manufacturing Processes
Running Head: Lean Thinking Model Lean Thinking Model and its Positive Effects on Manufacturing Processes June 11, 2009 Table of Contents Introduction4 Steps of the Lean Manufacturing Process5 Step 1:Identify the Value to Customers in Specific Products and Services5 Step 2:Identify the Business Processes the Delivers this Value to Customers8 Step 3:Organize Work Arrangements around the Flow of the Business Process8 Step 4:Create a Pull System that Responds to Customer Demands9 Step 5:Continuously Pursue Perfection in the Business Process10 Summary12 References14 Abstract The lean reasoning model has numerous constructive outcomes on the assembling procedure. The model guides organizations in the huge decrease of both human and common assets by expelling waste from all parts of the assembling procedure. Setting up sound procedures will thusly assist with dispensing with squander underway, workforce, and the executives assets. The lean reasoning model is a procedure with various advances required to guarantee viability for an organization. These means are rules that don't fit each association precisely since there are such huge numbers of contrasts between organizations. The capacity of lean is to look for and discover the estimation of your business. This procedure will decide the customerââ¬â¢s needs, consider the expulsion of non-esteem included capacities and assignments, and materials to turn into a lean business machine. Henry Ford and the Toyota Company delineate a case of the lean reasoning model. They designed, re-developed, and added to the lean thoroughly considering model the years and have exhibited that the model does elp make a proficient business. Presentation The Lean Thinking Model (or lean) falls straightforwardly in accordance with desires for clients requirements for a specific product offering by thoroughly decreasing abundance squander out of the procedure. An organization utilizing lean must upgrade the progression of creation forms so as to make it financially savvy and an effective procedur e. The way of thinking of lean is to evacuate all loss in the assembling procedure, give sensible estimating to the client, which thusly will bring about organization benefits and security. Toyota is the harbinger of the Lean assembling process and has been using, improving and idealizing this technique since 1902 (Becker, 2009). Toyotaââ¬â¢s time-based compensation including advantages, for example, human services and annuities plans is essentially less in contrast with their different rivals. Toyotaââ¬â¢s rate is $48. 00 dollars an hour where GMââ¬â¢s rate is $69. 00 dollars 60 minutes (Hirschfeld Davis, 2008). With both the current monetary emergency and government bailouts, some of Toyotaââ¬â¢s vehicle contenders clearly didn't follow the lean assembling process. In this way, Toyota is one of the top vehicle organizations today. The Toyota Production System is credited for Toyota as a result of their ââ¬Å"sustained authority in assembling performanceâ⬠(Johnsoton, 2001). Toyota has adjusted to changes inside the car business with greatness. They drive towards ââ¬Å"continuously improving the miniaturized scale levels of assembling forms through distinguishing proof and methodical decrease or end of non-esteem including activitiesâ⬠(Sullivan, 2008). Dennis Sowards expressed it very well when he stated, ââ¬Å"For lean development to be really fruitful, it requires a social change in the organization, not a couple of arbitrary usesâ⬠(Sowards, 2009). Not exclusively should an organization take an interest in a social change, they should build up an arrangement to change their procedures and their perspective. Organization programs lacking help and interest from employeesââ¬â¢ commonly are ineffective. There are five administration steps contained inside the Lean Thinking Model. This administration step approach functions admirably when applied to sort out a companyââ¬â¢s assets, for example, hardware and staff. These assets are consolidated ââ¬Å"â⬠¦around the progression of business processesâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ and the items are ââ¬Å"â⬠¦pulled through this procedure because of client ordersâ⬠(Garrison et al. , 2008, p. 13). An organization will see numerous advantages from this procedure, which could incorporate ââ¬Å"lower inventories, less imperfections, less squandered exertion, and speedier client reaction timesâ⬠(Garrison et al. , 2008, p. 13). Appeared beneath are the five lean strides alongside portrayals of each showing the huge of how these means add to the achievement of an organization. Steps of the Lean Manufacturing Process Step 1:Identify the Value to Customers in Specific Products and Services In request to support business, an organization must distinguish what the client esteems in an item and administration which will take that client back to purchase once more. A prime model where clients were frustrated by an item change is the point at which the Coca Cola Companyâ © discharged their new item called The New Cokeâ ©. This happened in 1985 after the Coca Cola Companyâ © investigated and advertised another item recipe, which they at first planned to supplant their orginal Coca Colaâ © Classic equation. Have you seen New Cokeâ © item invending machines or on the basic food item retires anyplace today? No. Since clients detested the new item and needed their unique Coca Colaâ © back. The Coca Colaâ © organization didn't discover what their client needed before changing their recipe and their clients were exceptionally affronted. Exercises took in: The association discovered rapidly that their client discovered positively no incentive in their new item. Coca Cola Companyâ © burned through 400,000,000 dollars for research, improvement and advertising of the new equation (Unknown, 2009). Following 87 days of awful press, client letters and calls with protests against the new equation, the Coca Colaâ © Company pulled the New Cokeâ © item off the racks (Unknown, 2009). The association could have forestalled this issue. They could have conveyed Coca Colaâ © tests to a huge number of clients instead of the underlying 200,000 of taste analyzers (Unknown, 2009). The purpose behind this anology is that the objective gathering of Coca Colaâ © darlings is in the millions, not in the thousands. To keep costs as low as could be expected under the circumstances, and make a maintainable upper hand, squander must be expelled from the assembling procedure (Baker, 2006). This incorporates the workplace laborer who sits around idly with two hours of cooler talk, the shop specialist who is standing idley by sitting tight for the creation line to equip back, or there are missing strides to the structure stream process. For an association to be lean, the thought must be executed from top down, not from the base up. It must incorporate help from all levels. At the point when people are remaining near and others are working unreasonably, there is an irregularity in the work process which could be adjusted by executing broadly educating all through different offices (Baker, 2006). Some portion of the waste decrease process is distinguishing all pocesses or business components that make waste and afterward altering them to diminish that squander. Most associations imagine that the lean procedure is to clean and arrange an office, for instance, or move faculty around with no idea to decrease non-esteem included capacities. By pulling out those means that don't include an incentive from the clients perspective and by evacuating waste, an organization may simply have a reasonable item on their hands (Baker, 2006). A business that comprehends the customerââ¬â¢s qualities will have the option to give that client an item that they need. Keep in mind, the lines of correspondence must stay open. Customerââ¬â¢s criticism for items is critical. The client criticism gives an important instrument to keep up existing quality and steps to improve a product offering if necessary. The client connection is a piece of the lean procedure. This progression in the lean procedure takes steady upkeep and collaboration between the two gatherings on ordinary bases (Baker, 2006). Companyââ¬â¢s that esteem their client suppositions enables the association to improve product offerings, decrease waste, and includes an incentive for progress. What makes a client stay faithful to a specific brand and buy it more than once? Usually a client discovers an incentive in a particular brand name, not simply the thing. For example, a few people will just wear Nikeâ © sneakers, this is explicit brand dependability. The estimation of a sensible valued thing is normally a decent second marker, however not generally. Item cost versus the nature of the item is another correlation the clients will make before purchasing. It has been my work force experience that a less expensive result of lesser quality will regularly need to supplanted in light of the fact that it destroyed too early. In the event that the nature of the item keeps going as long as the client feels it should dependent on the cost of the thing, at that point when the time has come to supplant it, they are bound to wander back to a similar brand. What the client esteems in a specific item should be distinguished to meet their spending plans need and keep them returning as a recurrent client for the organization. Client steadfastness is free publicizing for the producer. At the point when clients are glad about the items or administrations that they get from a business, they gloat about the item and the association. Gloating is free promoting of items or administrations. By recognizing the estimation of client criticism, causing the client to feel great while utilizing a specific item, the organization may increase a devoted companion forever. Step 2:Identify the Business Processes the Delivers this Value to Customers After a business recognizes what items and administrations the client needs, needs and qualities, their business forms that convey these items and administrations must be distinguished too (Garrison, et. al, 2008, p 14). The subsequent stage is to lean out those procedures to make them progressively productive. During this progression of the lean procedure, there are no departmental limits in the companyââ¬â¢s authoritative diagram when

How to Answer Are You Willing to Relocate in an Interview
How to Answer âAre You Willing to Relocateâ in an Interview Job interviews can be such a hassle!Interview starts the moment you enter the building/office, which basically means you can mess up before even opening your mouth. The interviewers will be observing your outfit, punctuality, handshake and body language. All of this before you even get to the actual questions. And when you do get to this part, mess up chances multiply by hundred. You already conducted research and thought potential questions through. In addition to the preparation, you will strive to preserve a smiling and relaxed image throughout this whole process.Everything matters. One of the trickiest questions you could face is a question regarding possible relocation, hence, whether you would be willing to move to another place for work.I remember the first time I got asked this in an interview. I was surprised and didnât know what to say at first! I presumed my readiness to do an interview for a company based in another country was self-explanatory.It was only later I realized that nothing is self-explanatory in the recruiting process.Sometimes, the interviewer is not really that interested in the actual answer to this question. He/she is a lot more interested to test your reaction and see how (rather than what) youâll answer. The ârelocationâ question falls into the category of such âtestâ questions. In other words: a company will not always want to move you immediately or maybe even ever but they will, frequently, ask this question to test your flexibility and dedication. And being so common and tricky, you may want to keep this question in mind while preparing for that interview you have coming up. Start by remembering this general wisdom: it is usually not so much what, but rather how you say something. And when it comes to communicating your thoughts properly, preparation is essential.PREPARATION FOR THE INTERVIEWPersonally, I am a huge fan of the spontaneous approach. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that an interview isnât a good plac e to test ones creativity. If you want to do well, you better get yourself as prepared as possible for literally everything. And I mean it: case studies, companyâs history, researching possible interviewers, searching for people you may know in the company.Last but not least: reflect thoroughly on all questions which could potentially come up, hence, think of potential answers you could provide. It is a bad feeling going back and thinking about all things you could have said differently/better. Therefore, it is worth investing a minute to think about the actual thing you wish to say.And this also refers to the question on potential relocation.âAre you willing to relocate for this job?â Well, the first question you should ask yourself (before the interview) is: Are you?The crucial part of the preparation is clearing up the situation inside your head and being honest about what you can and cannot do.If the answer is âdependsâ, you will still want to be very concrete about facto rs your decision depends on.After you are clear about what your answer should be, you may want to think about the manner in which you wish to convey your decision. As said, the interviewer may simply want to test your motivation for a job in that particular company. Reason more to approach this question with diligence. Finally, it is crucial that you answer honestly even if you decide to cover the essence with a bit of curtsy and small talk. Dishonesty in an interview rarely pays off in the long run.DIFFERENT SCENARIOS AND DIFFERENT ANSWERSSo, after you decided on what your answer essentially would be, take a look at a few possible answers for several different scenarios:You want to and can moveSuper easy, right?Yes, the decision itself could have been an easy one to make but you will still want to consider your exact answer.Let us imagine you are a young professional with some international experience, no strings attached and perfectly ready and eager to move for a job. That is all go od and the company will certainly look forward to hearing your affirmative reply.Nevertheless, note that form of this reply can be more significant than its exact content. You can say: âSure, absolutely, I can leave as soon as tomorrow! Money-wise it could a bit of an issue but if you could help with that, all should be good.âYou could say something like thisâ¦but you shouldnât. You are not preparing to head off for a school trip but to move to another city or country, hence, make a huge life decision. You will want to appear as a professional, who is aware of the significance of this step and who took all relevant circumstances into account. Therefore, your answer should be something like this:âThis would be an amazing opportunity, both professionally and privately. Thank you for taking me into account. As you know, I do, already, have some prior international experience and I certainly enjoy changes which is why I am confident this transition will run smoothly. Naturally, th ere are a lot of things that should be discussed and decided in advance which is why I would look forward to an in-depth conversation on this topic.âSee the difference?Yes, well, the interviewer will see it too.It doesnât necessarily mean that a first answer will trigger bad consequences but it may leave you looking incompetent, unserious or childish. And I presume this is not what you are aiming at.In this scenario, it is crucial to think the relocation process through, hence, to come up with potential questions for an interviewer. And donât worry; asking questions will not make you appear annoying but rather mature, professional and grounded.I know that the sole possibility of relocation may be extremely exciting but sometimes it is better to seem less enthusiastic if this makes you appear more professional. You could move, but only for a limited amount of timeOk, this one is a bit trickier but if this is your decision, you should be able to present it as professional as poss ible. Here, the key is to present your reasons, grounds, and limitations as clear and as structured as possible. What can you, what canât you do? For how long or how far would you be able to move? Be concrete.Following that, you should be able to provide reasons for such an answer. It is perfectly fine to be limited by personal reasons but notes that you will have to provide some justification for your answer.Whether this is family, children, personal attachment or the fact you recently bought a house you are still paying off⦠It is all fine but be prepared to explain it.Your answer could be something like this:âThank you so much for taking me into account for this amazing opportunity. Although I would love to accept it immediately, I must first warn you about my limitations. I would be glad to relocate; however, my relocation couldnât last for more than one year. As you probably know, I am always opened for remote projects and my family is used to this but a permanent relocat ion, unfortunately, just isnât an option for us. If a short-term relocation would be an option, I would definitely love to hear more about it.âPolite but on point.State your grounds while remaining honest about your limitations and preferences. You are unsure about the relocationCan âmaybeâ be an answer to the relocation question? The answer is yes, but you have to make sure you say it properly. You will not want to lose a good opportunity for appearing indecisive.Sometimes, a company just wants to test you, not necessarily relocate you.Nevertheless, this is a potentially major life decision and it is perfectly fine if you need more time and/or information. You will need to create more playgrounds for yourself, which means, no straightforward answers at first. You will want to demonstrate potential readiness to move while learning more about the concrete opportunity. What you should investigate are points, such as duration, development opportunities, relocation package and when e xactly they would want/need you there. Before discussing these tough questions, you should try to appear enthusiastic while remaining slightly vague with a definite answer. You could try something like this:âThis is a great opportunity for which I feel I would be a great fit. Thank you for taking me into account. I do enjoy working in this area but if relocation creates more room for career advancement and growth, I would definitely consider it.âIf the answer is âmaybeâ due to family/personal commitments, you should simply put it like that:âThis is a great opportunity and although Iâd love to accept it on the spot, I would have to discuss this with my family first. This would be a major life change for all of us, which is why I really must involve them in providing a final decision.ââMaybeâ doesnât have to appear indecisive. It can simply mean that you need more time, space and/or information and if you ask for it nicely, companies will generally be happy to provide you with whatever you need. You do not want to moveSaying ânoâ doesnât mean youâll get fired or that you wonât be hired in the first place. So try not to freak out in advance. Also, know that even though saying ânoâ may cost you this particular job (e.g. relocation is necessary), there are certainly ways to say it and still appear motivated by the position.Relocation is a huge step and it involves major life changes. It is perfectly fine if you decide to pass and in fact, nobody should take for granted youâll agree.Speaking of which, you most certainly shouldnât ever say yes if you donât mean it. In the long run, nobody will profit from you lying. Therefore, a ânoâ can be fine, but it very much matters how you say it. You surely donât want to say:âHell no. Iâm sorry but I have a life hereâ and end the conversation.No. You should always start by saying thank you and saying that you know what a fantastic opportunity this is. Following this, you should expl ain yourself and reasons why you truly cannot consider moving. If you consider your reasons to be too small or perhaps, unprofessional (e.g. short relationship you started recently but are really enjoying), try to come up with additional ones or just remain vague: e.g. say you have personal reasons for being unable to relocate at this point.Chances are that an interviewer will prefer such an answer over your history of relationships or the whole story about your very close relationship with your parents.Try to judge your reasons from the third-party perspective and if the story doesnât seem too convincing, try to work your way around it without giving away too many details. Finally, do emphasize your interest in the company, position and work you would be doing if hired. Say that you would really appreciate being given a chance on that location if such a possibility exists. Finally, do try leaving relocation door slightly open (if only in theory).Say that you wouldnât exclude reloc ation completely, especially if such an opportunity entails more chances for development and growth.Even if you truly cannot imagine this happening, say something in this tone.Very subtle and cautious but try not to be too exclusive. Honesty is perfectly fine and even desirable, but this is simply a smart way to play it.You initiate the moveChances are that this question will not really pop up in this scenario since it will be you initiating the relocation, hence, your willingness will be pretty obvious.Still, as in all other scenarios, you should be careful how you approach this issue. Especially in cases where you are on an interview or already working in one location while wanting to be considered for a relocation.Frequently, this will be taken as a health initiative and will be perfectly fine.Nevertheless, this attempt may still come across as dissatisfaction with a job at a current location and if so, the employer may not really like this.Especially in cases where a relocation includes a significant salary increase or you decide to relocate so that you could boost your promotion chances, it is important to be smart about putting those motives into words. It is probably better if you start with motives, such as challenging environment, learning and development opportunities, life change, different cultural experience, personal reasons (friends or family in the other location) etc.More specific grounds should follow only after this general introduction. At this point, you can mention something like better advancement opportunities or relocation as a condition for promotion etc.In many companies nowadays, it is perfectly fine and even admirable to initiate the relocation.Still, try not to offend anyone, skip the money/salary factors and finally, emphasize your overall satisfaction with the current location and position. Those who dear win, but you will want to avoid unnecessary risks.ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS WHICH COULD COME UPEven if you state your reasons perfec tly well and eloquent, be aware that an interviewer may keep coming up after you. This is simply something they do and you will have to deal with it.Bearing this in mind, it may be useful to think some potential additional questions through:Q1: Why donât you want to move? Itâs a great opportunity.A1: It truly is. If my situation would be even slightly different, Iâd jump right on it. Nevertheless, for reasons I already explained earlier, I just canât accept it. If something changes in the future, I would be more than willing to revisit this topic again.Q2: What if we improved the deal? (e.g. pay for the entire move; offer incentives such as raise, promotion, moving bonus; help a spouse with finding a job).A2: Well, I canât claim this offer isnât tempting. Would you mind giving me some time (e.g. day, two, three) to think about it? I would still have to discuss this new package/offer with my family. I am not promising anything, but I would appreciate a chance to reconside r the whole deal with a clear head.Q3: Weâre eliminating your position here regardless of your relocation. Do you really want to lose your job?A3: That is truly misfortunate given a terrific experience I had in this company. Is there a chance a could get some additional time to try to come up with the best solution, satisfactory for both sides?Q4: How soon could you move here and start working for us?A4: Given my excitement regarding this opportunity, I would love to be there as soon as possible, that is, as soon as you want me. Naturally, there are some technical obstacles to me being there immediately which is why Iâd say I could be available in⦠(Provide a minimum time frame). With the purpose of making this whole process smoother and faster, I propose we discuss details of relocation in more detail.POINTS TO EMPHASIZERegardless of your answer and the explanation you provide, there are a few things which should always be emphasized, and a few tricks which will provide you w ith a kind of a safety net.Talk about the position with enthusiasm, regardless of whether or not you are willing to move!We already discussed this. The relocation question may be just a test or a remote possibility. If you really want the job, make sure you let it show.Be honest with what you want and donât want: this will prevent future issues if you get the position.Honesty is essential. You may be tempted to lie in an interview because you really want this job but if moving really isnât an option, do say it.It will be so much harder to leave the company after already getting the job and you could also risk some bad professional reputation for being insincere, which is never a good outcome.Emphasize your sincerity for wanting to work in the company. The same as with the first point. Make sure to make the company aware of your interest in it. Make sure they know how much you would appreciate being given an opportunity.Ask questions about relocation to see if this is a right move for you. This one is important. You may be super excited to hit the road and move but asking questions will demonstrate an overall professionalism. THINGS YOU SHOULD AVOID SAYINGJust as there are some key points which should be emphasized, there are a lot more phrases and things you should simply never, ever say.I will try to enlist some of these below so do make sure to remember them for these (or similar) phrases can be a career killer:âWill I get paid more if I decide to do it?âI think it is perfectly clear this is a major no go.As previously mentioned, you should be very cautious when discussing money/salary issues.Being this opened about it is plain bad and will most definitely be unattractive for a person talking to you.Donât just say ânoâ if you are unable to move.As with anything else, simple ânoâ is rarely a satisfactory answer. In an interview, almost never. A plain ânoâ, will almost inevitably put you out of the run for a position.Unless you really donâ t care, try putting some effort into explaining grounds for your decision.Do not definitively confirm if there are uncertainties about your ability to transfer.Again, honesty and transparency.I know you want to take the deal and show your absolute readiness but being honest will frequently be accepted just as well.On the other hand, lying and changing previously given statements almost never will.Pick up the courage and explain the situation.Trust me, this is way better than stressing out about letting interviewers know things you said no longer stand.Donât be too vague / give answers which donât provide any real informationTalk business. Itâs ok not to reveal absolutely everything but do give some flesh to your story. Interviewers donât like being fooled around. Saying things like:âI am not sure this is the right moment for me to take this step/ I am not sure this would be possible for me at this pointâ most probably will not come across well.Try not to waste other peo ple time by providing general statements.YOU ARE NOW READYâ¦With these tips, you should be perfectly fine to answer the relocation question. And indeed, any answer can be a good one, as long as you put it nicely. It is a difficult question because relocation itself is a difficult and a significant move.Make sure you get your head, facts, and goals straight and provide a definite answer only after you are sure you know what you want.Stay polite, clear and humble and remember: you got this!

Welfare Drug Testing Persuasive Speech - 1704 Words
a) Introduction a.i) Government assistance, or welfare, is a very broad term. There are many different welfare programs available in the United States e.g., food stamps, cash assistance, and government housing. Currently there is mass debate, in courtrooms across the U.S., regarding the legality and morality of pre-assistance drug testing. This report is intended to familiarize the reader with the history of welfare reform; the histories of drug testing in regards to assistance eligibility; and persuade the audience to vote yes for mandatory pre-assistance drug testing. b) Body b.i) History of Welfare (b.i.1) The first welfare programs originated with the Social Security Act of 1935. Using Ms. Lower-Baschââ¬â¢s estimation of the cost of an individual drug test, administered by a third party however, the immediate cost is negligible in comparison. Ms. Lower-Basch states one drug test costs between $20 and $80. As an example, if Indiana were to test 1,000 TANF recipients, and all of them passed, the maximum immediate cost would be $80,000. Based on Michiganââ¬â¢s statistical rate of 10 percent drug use, we could expect 100 failed screens, which eliminate those individuals from receiving benefits for six months. The average TANF recipient receives $269 per month, for a total of $1614 per person save d during the disqualification period. If you multiply $1614 by 100 recipients, the government would be saving a net amount of $89,400 over six months even after paying out the $72,000 to the individuals that passed their screens. A second opposing viewpoint is that drug testing is racist and stereotypes recipients as drug abusers . While some may view drug screening of government assistance applicants as stereotyping, it is important to realize that the individuals proposing drug screening are not forcing anyone to undergo screening. The Cold War Between The Us And The Soviet Union - 1738 Words
Part 1-No sooner had the hot war ended than the cold war began. Trace this development of the Cold War from about 1945 through the end of the Eisenhower administration in 1961, showing how the United States reacted to and tried to cope with the specter of international communism. In your analysis, what in fact caused the Cold War, and what was the legacy of the Truman and Eisenhower administrations in foreign affairs? The Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was already in the making even before the hot war ended, as the Soviet Red Army rolled over the Russian border into Eastern Europe, finally capturing Berlin. In 1944, the Western Allies believe that the stood by while Hitler sent in the SS to destroy the Warsaw Uprising and the city of Warsaw itself, because he did not intend to allow a pro-Western government in Poland. In Poland at least, the Soviet intention was to install a satellite regime, although Stalin did not do this with Finland, Hungary or Czechoslovakia, at least not immediately. From the American and British viewpoint, the threat of the atomic bomb was necessary to restrain the Soviets, although this turned out to be a serious miscalculation. Stalin ordered work on the Russian atomic bomb speeded up, and one was tested successfully in 1949, so the American monopoly on these weapons lasted only four years. Throughout the Cold War, it became clear that no matter which weap ons the U.S. developed, the Soviets would match them, such as testing aShow MoreRelatedCauses And Effects Of The Cold War1370 Words à |à 6 PagesEffects of the Cold War Richard Nixon once said of the Cold War that ââ¬Å"the Cold War isn t thawing; it is burning with a deadly heat. The Hunger Games Free Essays
The Hunger Games takes place in a nation known as Panem, established in North America after the destruction of the continentââ¬â¢s civilization by an unknown apocalyptic event. The nation consists of the wealthy Capitol and twelve surrounding, poorer districts united under the Capitolââ¬â¢s control. District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly known as Appalachia. We will write a custom essay sample on The Hunger Games or any similar topic only for you Order Now 4] As punishment for a past rebellion against the Capitol, in which a 13th district was destroyed, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by an annual lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which the participants (or ââ¬Å"tributesâ⬠) must fight to the death in an outdoor arena controlled by the Capitol, until only one individual remains. The story is narrated by 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 who volunteers for the 74th annual Hunger Games in place of her younger sister, Primrose. The male tribute chosen from District 12 is Peeta Mellark, a former schoolmate of Katniss who once gave her bread from his familyââ¬â¢s bakery when her family was starving. Katniss and Peeta are taken to the Capitol, where their drunken mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, victor of the 50th Hunger Games, instructs them to watch and determine the strengths and weaknesses of the other tributes. Stylistsâ⬠are employed to make each tribute look his or her best; Katnissââ¬â¢s stylist, Cinna, is the only person at the Capitol with whom she feels a degree of understanding. The tributes are publicly displayed to the Capitol audience in an interview with television host Caesar Flickerman, and have to attempt to appeal to the television audience in order to obtain ââ¬Å"sponsorsâ⬠. During this time, Peeta reveals on-a ir his longtime unrequited love for Katniss. Katniss believes this to be a ploy to gain sponsors, who can be critical to survival because of their ability to send gifts such as food, medicine, and tools to favored tributes during the Games. While nearly half the tributes are killed in the first day of the Games, Katniss relies on her well-practiced hunting and survival skills to remain unharmed and concealed from the other tributes. A few days into the games, Katniss develops an alliance with Rue, a 12-year-old girl from the agricultural District 11 who reminds Katniss of her own sister. In the meantime, Peeta appears to have joined forces with the tributes from the richer districts. However, when he has the opportunity to kill Katniss, he instead saves her from the others. Katnissââ¬â¢s alliance with Rue is brought to an abrupt end when Rue is killed by another tribute, whom Katniss then kills with an arrow. Katniss sings to Rue until she dies, and spreads flowers over her body as a sign of respect for Rue and disgust towards the Capitol. Apparently because of Katniss and Peetaââ¬â¢s image in the minds of the audience as ââ¬Å"star-crossed loversâ⬠, a rule change is announced midway through the Games, allowing two tributes from the same district to win the Hunger Games as a couple. Upon hearing this, Katniss begins searching for Peeta. She eventually finds him, wounded and in hiding. As she nurses him back to health, she acts the part of a young girl falling in love to gain more favor with the audience and, consequently, gifts from her sponsors. When the couple remain as the last two surviving tributes, the Gamemakers reverse the rule change in an attempt to force them into a dramatic finale, where one must kill the other to win. Katniss, knowing that the Gamemakers would rather have two victors than none, retrieves highly poisonous berries known as ââ¬Å"nightlockâ⬠from her pouch and offers some to Peeta. Realizing that Katniss and Peeta intend to commit suicide, the Gamemakers announce that both will be the victors of the 74th Hunger Games. Although she survives the ordeal in the arena and is treated to a heroââ¬â¢s welcome in the Capitol, Katniss is warned by Haymitch that she has now become a political target after defying her societyââ¬â¢s authoritarian leaders so publicly. Afterwards, Peeta is heartbroken when he learns that Katnissââ¬â¢s actions in the arena were part of a calculated ploy to earn sympathy from the audience. However, Katniss is unsure of her own feelings and realizes that she is dreading the moment when she and Peeta will go their separate ways. @wikepedia How to cite The Hunger Games, Essay examples The Hunger Games Free Essays For the month of October I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Primrose gets picked for this event and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Throughout this novel, Katniss faces many hardships on her journey to win the Hunger Games. The theme/lesson learned from this book is to never give up even if you are in the hardest situation. A passage from the book that describes Katniss and her hardships is: ââ¬Å"I better get out of here, I think. Theyââ¬â¢ll be making a beeline for this place. But once Iââ¬â¢m on my feet, I realize escape may not be so simple. Iââ¬â¢m dizzy. I take a few steps and somehow wind up on my hands and knees. I wait a few minutes to let it pass, but it doesnââ¬â¢t. Panic begins to set in. I canââ¬â¢t stay here. â⬠(P. 222-223) I would rate this book five stars because it is remarkable, full of action and suspense, and makes you never want to stop reading. I would recommend this book to action and suspense lovers. I would not recommend this book to people that do not like violence or blood because there is a lot of violence in this novel. Between The World And Me Black Body And Cautious Optimism Essay Example For Students
Between The World And Me: Black Body And Cautious Optimism Essay Racism and the strife towards a non-oppressive society has been a task attempted by many, ranging from extreme activists, to educators, to the proactive civilian. Such prejudice serves as a confine to those impacted, filtering out opportunities of this alleged ââ¬Å"free nationâ⬠for minorities. While many individuals go to great lengths to avoid this sensitive subject, it is crucial that the dialogue and discussion persist so solutions and ways to resolve this systematic oppression are discovered and explored. In Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the topic of racism for African Americans is explored. The book goes into details of how America intentionally ââ¬Å"destroys the Black body,â⬠and refuses to acknowledge their oppressive habits that puts institutions in the hands of the White folks. How can a father truly protect his own son from a nation so violent and so hateful? Only through education and encouraging a a mindset of empathy and compassion is how Coates found fitting to prevent a highly plausible reality of his son succumbing to the words of the oppressors. The first theme that Coates explore is the nationââ¬â¢s intentional ways to oppress the black body, recounting his own experiences of his younger years, ââ¬Å"Here is what I would like for you to know: In America, it is traditional to destroy the black bodyââ¬âââ¬âit is heritage. â⬠Coates does this in attempt to relay to his son the dangers of being black in American, having evidence of how exactly the world is out to get the African American demographic. Destroying the black body is Americaââ¬â¢s way to firmly establish a power move with white people on top. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦so that America might justify itself, the story of a black bodyââ¬â¢s destruction must begin with his or her error, real or imaginedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ By just having a darker complexion, by just merely existing, can African Americans fear for their lives for having done nothing wrong but just exist as an individual with melanin in their blood. ââ¬Å"The truth is that the police reflect America in all of its will and fear, and whatever we might make of this countryââ¬â¢s criminal justice policy, it cannot be said that it was imposed by a repressive minority. â⬠This painful truth makes it an arduous task for African Americans to stand against this brutality, yet it is absolutely necessary as seen through Coates deciding to even write this. If he felt it were useless to try to suede his son towards a more knowledgeable future, he would not dedicate the time to write this book to him. In the text, Coates reflects on his own desire to leave the burdens and achieve what he then considered the ââ¬Å"American Dream.â⬠ââ¬Å"For so long I have wanted to escape into the Dream, to fold my country over my head like a blanket. But this has never been an option because the Dream rests on our backs, the bedding made from our bodies.â⬠The concept of the American dream is flawed since it depends on the subjugation and oppression of African Americans, the only way that this ââ¬Å"American Dreamâ⬠can flourish is through the beat down of African Americans. This is not a dream, but a flaw. Why does America constantly reiterate this idea of the ââ¬Å"self made manâ⬠when it does not take into account the endless obstacles that perpetuates African Americans lack of ability to efficiently climb up the social ladder unlike the white predecessors. Literature can be an outlet for oneââ¬â¢s desire, dreams, ambitions, etc. However, in regards to this situation, Coates utilizes this medium to speak an important message of overcoming racial barriers for his son. This book, Coatesââ¬â¢ usage of personal anecdotes, grand metaphors, and a cautionary yet empowering diction that allows his message to shine through. ââ¬Å"But all our phrasingââ¬ârace relations, racial chasm, racial justice, racial profiling, white privilege, even white supremacyââ¬âserves to obscure that racism is a visceral experience, that it dislodges brains, blocks airways, rips muscle, extracts organs, cracks bones, breaks teeth. .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .postImageUrl , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:hover , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:visited , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:active { border:0!important; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:active , .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565 .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud74c405feb7947a1fa951b547409f565:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Nonsense Essay You must never look away from this. There is an unerasable burden that is thrust upon them, finding that balance of advocating for racial justice. However, remaining aware that through the institutional sectors that aid in oppressing African Americans, their words of justice and seeking what is right can easily be silenced. There is something chilling, reading the cautionary words said to his own son, ââ¬Å"They had worked two and three jobs, put children through high school and college, and become pillars of their community. I admired them, but I knew the whole time that I was merely encountering the survivorsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ This structure parallels the racial hierarchy that has been established and continuously reiterated throughout history. The passion and pain that is read throughout Between the World and Me elevates Coatesââ¬â¢ impact, giving the opportunity to let his words marinate in the minds of the reader. While Coatesââ¬â¢ encourages his son to acknowledge these components that play into being African American, he does not, however, encourage resentment and hostility. Rather he pushes his son towards conducting himself in a manner that is not so easily accomplished, compassion and understanding towards the oppressors. ââ¬Å"In accepting both the chaos of history and the fact of my total end, I was freed to truly consider how I wished to liveââ¬âââ¬âspecifically, how do I live free in this black body?â⬠One cannot truly understand the weight that must be carried unless had experienced themselves.Yet, it is easy to call out the different incidents and experiences that contribute to the mess that is America. However, to not seek answers in the conglomerate of injustices and aggressions is not the path that one should take according to the text of Coates, ââ¬Å"It is truly horrible to understand yourself as the essential below of your country. It breaks too much of what we would like to think about ourselves, our lives, the world we move through and the people who surround us. The struggle to understand is our only advantage over this madness.â⬠To reach full fledged liberation from the racial oppression, Coatesââ¬â¢ stresses for a transformed dialogue, not filled with hate and desire to supersede the white folk of America. While Coatesââ¬â¢ writings may just be one of many African American literature, his choice to write a piece that requires an amazing amount of vulnerability comes to show the dedication to acknowledging and overcoming racial barriers that many African Americans must commit to. ââ¬Å"I would not have you descend into your own dream. I would have you be a conscious citizen of this terrible and beautiful world.â⬠As readers, we are able to catch a glimpse of Coatesââ¬â¢ perspectives his fears, hopes, and desires for his son. The entire concept of whiteness comes hand in hand with being extremely privileged, benefitting from the exploitation of African Americans. The exploitation of African Americans is derived from the disadvantageous institutions to African Americans, the amount of foreign industries that set their ways to utilize Africaââ¬â¢s dependency in the fiscal hemisphere, and the historical defacing of the demographicââ¬â¢s humanity. With Ta-Nehisi and his words, one can only hope there is movement upwards towards an equal society. The nation should not be complacent in mediocrity but rather should strive for a society where no exploitation takes place, no institutional benefit towards a dominant group but rather all demographics benefitting from services that are meant to assist all individuals. .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .postImageUrl , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:hover , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:visited , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:active { border:0!important; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:active , .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3 .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u66b04682bd0138428b960a487c0b2ce3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Giver by Joe Smith Essay Through Between the World and Me, there lies the possibility of a future not riddled with fear and anxiety but rather purity and the strife towards a more compassionate future.
